Two of my favourite things to do at Christmas time is to watch Miracle on 34th Street and bake cut-out sugar cookies decorated with icing. I have done these since I was young and if I can do both in the same day, then even better. A couple of weeks ago my oldest daughter surprised me with a new dvd copy of the movie.
Here is my favourite recipe:
2/3 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1 tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
Mix together and make into a ball. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out dough and cut into shapes. Bake for 7 minutes at 375F. (You'll want to double the recipe.)
After cooled, decorate with coloured icing and red & green sugar sprinkles. You can buy canned icing and separate into small containers and mix with food colouring, or make your own.
Icing
1 cup icing sugar
1/4 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp milk

I love that movie too...The newer version, especially. That little girls is TOO CUTE!! ;o)
Thanks Rhonda...i was just asking Jen if she had a good recipe for sugar cookies. Hannah wants to make some for school...Yummy!!
AHHHH...
The Newer version is My hubby's tradition. After we decorate the tree, for the last number of years, Mark and I cuddle up with or without kiddies and watch Miracle on 34'th street.
This year, we did it after kids went to bed, and we were both wiping our eyes and sniffling at the end....even after seeing it 10-12 times....we are so sappy! What I love the most is that Mark started this tradition.
Seriously- those are 2 of my absolute favorite things about Christmas too!
I sent your package out yesterday. My husband said you may have to pay something for it though because I checked "gift"- oh I hope not! I felt terrible when I realized that! Sorry!
Not sure how long it will take to get to you. I included the CD you requested too! :)
PS:
I add a tiny bit of almond flavoring to my frosting and it is really yummy!
I think my Christmas tradition is overeating!!
I made the sugar cookies. All 4 of us had a great time...we used red and green icing and used paint brushes (new ones, of course!) to apply...then we added red and green sugars, tiny white snow flakes, and colored sprinkles. I am hoping to take some pictures tomorrow. They are really nice! Thanks for sharing the recipie Rhonda.
PS> I had to add more milk to the icing as we wanted it more of a runny consistency.
