Fun At Work

I had fun at work today. If you're reading my blog for the first time, I work in an office at a high school.

We have a student phone that sits on a ledge beside my desk.

Today, while looking through some storage cupboards I discovered another telephone.

Not a new phone. A black dial phone. Like this one...
I decided it might be fun to see the reactions of the students. I replaced their push-button phone with this lovely retro dial set.

The students that came in throughout the day to make their calls each stopped and questioned why the new set. We informed them that this was a new phone that we had just purchased and it was the latest in retro designs. They all bought it!

It was too funny watching them try to figure it out. They would just look at it in confusion. They had no idea what they were to do. We had to explain it to most of them.

We decided that we were empowering them by furthering their education in the field of communication. Ha!

If I'd been able to secretly film them today, I'm certain I could have won top prize.

Having fun while at work is the only way to go!

LOL! I wish I could have been a fly on the wall! I laugh at the Fisher-Price toy phone they still make because it has a rotary dial. My kids have no idea that what that is for...

What a priceless moment.
Wish I could have seen the confusion on their faces.

That's funny. It takes sooo much longer to wait for the dial to go all the way around. Wow, as I wrote that, I thought, "Boy, we are really impatient sometimes." Spoiled really - expecting everything to come easily and instantly.

Great idea to set up a hidden camera. Why not try it? I'm sure there would be great comments. I wonder what they would do with a old crank phone?

We took our kids to the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa a couple years ago. We entered the Communications section and they had the same reaction to a rotary phone ... "This is a WHAT? A phone!!!???" Kinda makes me feel OLD!

I bet it was hilarious to watch them try to figure it out!
Great idea.

We had one of those phones for YEARS after the "new" ones came in...it took my parents a LONG time to "jump in"... And they still use the rotary one outside in the summer...

At Target last night I saw a phone like that but pink, you may be starting a new trend!

This is completely awesome! I wish that you had videotaped it. An email forward has gone around for years telling us about how this generation has never experienced certain things like rotary phones. It's mind boggling. fun stuff!

I love this story! I actually miss those old rotary phones now (nostalgia I guess) but I remember we were one of the last families to join the "push button" age. When we finally did get the updated version it was powder blue. Oh, I thought we were so stylin'. One thing though, you can never win a radio dial in contest on a rotary phone.

Have a good weekend!

I love your sense of humour. I had to share this with Rebekah.

Rhonda, that is too funny! It is nice to see that you can keep your sense of humor while at work.

I realized I am no longer "young" when my daughter asked me what a typewriter was!

Sorry it took me so long to write back--I went out-of-town.

Loved this story.

Technology has come so far in a few short years...recently I had to explain the term "broken record" to Keegan. He had no clue..
